Self-esteem coaching is a cornerstone of the life coaching industry. What I mean by that is that all types of life coaches have to know basic principles self-esteem coaching in order to do their job well.
If you have done even a little bit of research or even thought about it, you know that in order to help your client move forward toward their goals, you need to help them gain confidence in their own ability to change their life for the better. As important as confidence and self-esteem are to a person’s growth, it is no wonder that self-esteem coaching is an industry on its own.
In this day and age, we are often taught that the only way to be a good person is to be selfless and to focus on building others. In a race to not be vain and to be less superficial, people forget to focus on themselves. This is a critical failing built into the life of a modern human being.
I’ve seen it come up again and again. People assume that being selfless, being kind, and caring about others means that you cannot focus on your own needs. This is the exact opposite of the truth.
Healthy confidence and self-esteem come from knowing who you are and knowing that you are positively affecting your own life and lives of those around you. As a self-esteem coach, you will need to focus intensely on the needs of your client, while showing by example how a confident person operates in a daily setting.
As I often say to my clients, be the perfect example of your own coaching. Through your model of behaviour and with your support, your client will learn that supporting others should not come at the cost of their focus on themselves. Helping others in a healthy way can and should be an extension of improving yourself.
Now, I want to discuss a few basic things with you. If you want to become a self-esteem coach, here a few things you should know:

Who is a Self-Esteem Coach?
Anybody who can teach you how to be kind to yourself and how to believe in yourself is a self-esteem coach. I know that it sounds easy, but it is not. If you have been doing your research, then you know that a big part of being a self-esteem coach is helping people identify the negative voices in their head, and overcoming the effect of that voice by keeping track of their “good deeds” for the day.
These “good deeds” are the good things your client does in the course of their day, in order to make other people’s lives better or to improve their community. We are taught early on that as good people, we need to not only do good things, but we need to do them and not self-congratulate ourselves for it. I do not think that is a good way to go about things. I think that when you do positive things, you should let that light of positivity reflect your life as well.
If you do good things as part of your day, don’t brush them off as just another thing you did. There is a difference between being boastful and being aware of your own worth. As a coach, it is your job to help your clients find that balance.
You should also know the types of negative inner monologues that people have. As contrary as it sounds, some people’s inner monologues are negative in a way that empowers them. It offers constructive criticism. As a coach, you should know the difference between a debilitating negative mental voice and a critical inner monologue that helps them improve themselves. If you don’t know the difference, you could take away a very powerful self-analytical tool away from your client without realising it.
I recommend that before you implement any improvement strategies, get to know your client. Get to know what works for them. Understand their faults, failings, and strengths. Do not offer a one-size-fits-all solution to everyone, as that can damage a person.
How to become a Self-esteem coach?
You can become a self-esteem coach by helping someone improve their self-esteem. I know that sounds like I’m oversimplifying things, but trust me, I’m not. As long as you can offer your clients real results, it doesn’t matter how you became a coach. What matters is what you offer. If you can offer them real-life improvements through your methods, no one will care if you have any certification.
If you are still learning how to become a coach, you can take some training courses to understand the industry better and to make connections. I’ll talk about these courses in detail later.
In the self-improvement industry, connections are crucial. Network, mingle and make meaningful connections with your peers and people around you. Be interesting, and become an example of your own brand. As a self-esteem coach, you should be confident without being self-aggrandizing.
When you meet people, treat them with respect. As a coach, people are more likely to trust you and be connected to you, when they see you as someone who can add value to their lives.
In preparation for a training course, you can also do a basic course that helps you understand human behaviour patterns. This will greatly help you understand the negative behaviour cycles that people have, and how you can help them break it. You can do these courses online, or in a training centre near you.
The Truth About Becoming a Self-Esteem Coach
As a self-esteem coach, you’ll spend your day focusing on your clients and helping them understand the power of their worth to the world around them. While you are helping your client focus on their best self, don’t forget to do it yourself.
As I said, you should teach your clients to extend their kindness through their own self. What I mean by that is, that you should teach them to be kind and generous to themselves first and then channel the same positive energy outwards. While you do that, don’t forget this lesson yourself.
Coaches often get so immersed in improving their client’s life that they forget to take care of themselves first. I see it often, and it is one of the worst things that coaches can do to themselves. As the air hostesses say, put your own oxygen mask on first.
How long does it take to become a self-esteem coach?
Ah, the age-old question. But like the problem with the chicken and the egg, the answer is more complex than it is supposed to be. The thing is, that you get to decide when you get to be called a coach. It can depend on many things: how long till you’re certified, or till you have the ability, or till you make money.
You could become a life coach in the next 5 minutes by saying “Sai, I’m a life coach”.
I’ll believe you too, that’s not the problem. The problem is, that just because you call yourself a coach, doesn’t mean you’ll be good at it, or make any money.
It is an unregulated industry, so people here are self-declared. This is a double-edged sword. On one hand, you don’t need to throw good money after bad on courses that you think are pointless, and you don’t need to go to college for it. On the other hand, you compete with people based only on how well you present yourself and how well connected you and your past clients are.
So you can say that once the process of getting your certification, setting up your business, and finding sources of making money like Joint Ventures is done, then you can consider yourself a coach.
The setting up of business and finding sources is easy if you have direction (which is what we do at Sai.Coach) in a matter of few weeks.
If you do decide to become a certified coach, there are many options available to you. They can cost anything between $19 and $4,750. A course can be as long as 21 weeks, or as short as 7 hours. It all depends on what you choose, and how prestigious these certifications are.
Best self-esteem coach training courses around the globe
As I said, while you don’t really need a certification or a training course to call yourself a coach, you can get some certification or training to legitimize your business and to set yourself apart from the other coaches.
Remember, your clients come to you expecting a certain product or service. If you are unsure about the quality of your service, it is best to get a certification that can help you feel more confident about your business too. The thing is, that clients want to believe in you. They do. They want to believe that there is someone out there who can guide them to their better selves, so you just need to be confident in what you are offering and add value to their experience. That’s all.

What type of people are hiring self-esteem coaches these days?
I would be doing a disservice to our community if I pretended that people who only need a quick pep talk are going to be your average clients. They are not. If all they needed was a quick generic motivational speech, they wouldn’t need your services.
You have to understand that for most people who get stuck in a negative feedback cycle, being seen, heard, understood and supported are foreign feelings. They might not even respond positively to a pep talk if you were to give one. When you think that the world ignores you, a pep talk seems condescending and disingenuous. Don’t think that just because a person lacks confidence they lack the ability to distinguish genuine offer of support from dishonest feel-good lies.
People have an innate ability to tell honest efforts apart. If you respect your client, you’ll have to be honest with them and help them in a way that suits each individual in the best way. We should warn you that since your clientele is going to be devoid of confidence, you’ll have to try very hard when taking feedback.
If you clients lack confidence, they might not want to share honest feedback with you if they think it will put them on the spot or result in a confrontation. Instead of giving you their honest feedback, they’ll just not come back. That is not good for you, because you’ll just wake up one day with no clients returning your calls. Don’t fall into a forced polite rhythm. It helps no one.
Encourage your clients to be responsive, and take their criticism well. If you react negatively to feedback, I can assure you that your clients would rather leave you than confront you.
What don’t most self-esteem coaches get about building a business?
As a coach, you’ll be beginning as a freelancer. You’ll get paid as and when your clients come back to you, so you need to focus on client retention quite a lot. While you are doing that, it is easy to lose sight of a few things.
Most people look for self-improvement services online. Don’t get left behind, build a strong online presence. If you aren’t getting enough clients through your own efforts, let us step in do it for you. Watch my free webinar to see what I mean by building a strong online presence and how it can help you grow your business.
Most coaches forget to build their online business while they are helping their clients because they don’t have the time for it, but because of this, they lose a lot of prospective clients. It is important for you to build an online presence, and if you can’t do it yourself, hire someone to do it for you.
Once you know that your online presence is secure, make sure that you have an accountant or a bookkeeper who can manage your finances for you. You should be making money, but you shouldn’t have to worry about it all the time.
Coming back to marketing and networking, I know that it seems like too big an investment, but trust me, the return on your investment is huge, especially in an unregulated industry like the self-improvement industry. We have seen that Joint Ventures, our program that groups coaches together and markets for them collectively, can give a manifold return on investments. It also places you in an enviable position where you can network with your peers while also sharing their spotlight.
An unfortunate side of coaching is the non-payment. I know that, as coaches, we become highly invested in our clients’ success, and it feels like a personal victory when they succeed. It’s easy to demand your fee from clients who are succeeding. Clients who, for whatever reason, are not succeeding in their efforts to improve, won’t feel like paying you. Have a backup plan for those circumstances.
The way you want to collect on your payments is entirely up to you. Some coaches establish a per-session payment plan. This ensures that even if a client defaults, only one session is unpaid for.
Some coaches collect payment intermittently based on training stages, this is riskier, but leaves you with more flexibility and allows you to build trust. I wouldn’t recommend this plan unless you are very in the industry and don’t have a steady clientele.
I understand that you don’t want to be another source of pressure on your already vulnerable client, but unless you collect your fair wages, you’ll be forced to close your doors, and all your clients who have come to depend on you, will now needlessly suffer. It is better for everyone involved if you have a fair and unemotional way of collecting your payments.
The right reasons for becoming a self-esteem coach.
While earning money is a fair reason for doing any job, you have to understand that the coaching industry is, at its heart, a service industry. You will need to be able to focus on the needs of our clients above your own, and you’ll need to put the first.
If your clients don’t genuinely believe that you are there to help them, they will not be open to your offers of support. Unless they can see that our approach towards their growth is honest and genuine, they won’t recommend you to other prospective clients.
Make sure that before you enter their industry you are willing, to be honest, and genuine with your clients and treat their needs with the respect that they deserve.
Coaching is not just an easy paycheck. Coaches help people overcome life blocks that are hindering their growth, and they help people become a much better version of themselves. If you can see yourself devoting that much time to your client’s personal growth, then this industry is perfect for you.

What qualifications do I need to become a certified self-esteem coach?
As I said before, this is an unregulated industry in which most people have no certifications. However, training yourself is always helpful and can lend more legitimacy in eyes of the skeptical. I recommend going through any of the courses that I’ve mentioned earlier in the article, and a basic training in human psychology never hurts.
