Are you a social skills coach?
Do you want to make your career as a social skills coach?
Great. You are at the right place!
Social skills coaching has gained huge popularity in recent times. Many new coaches are choosing social skills coaching as their coaching niche.
A simple answer to this is the below question:
Who doesn’t wants to master social skills?
After all, we need good social skills everywhere. Whether someone is in the workplace or at home, social skills are very important to convey views and avoid misunderstanding.
It is not easy for everyone to be good at meeting/conversing or dealing with people. If a person isn’t able to mingle well it naturally lowers his/her confidence.
A social skills coach comes handy here. The coach guide clients to discover their inner strengths. Along with his/her approach and strategies, the coach makes it easier for the client to get command on social skills.
I am sure you will get a lot of material on how to become a social skills coach, certifications and stuff online.
What I want you to know today are certain tips and points that will help you to stand apart.
If you are a social coach or are aspiring to become one, then there are some key points that you should know. In this article, I will be dwelling on that.
So let’s start!
Do you want to convince your clients?
Then you must be aware of the benefits of your coaching business.
Why would someone hire you?
Only when you know it, you will be able to convey your prospects the fruitfulness of your coaching services.
Your clients may not understand your need until and unless you explicitly make them realize it.
There can be a lot of questions coming into the minds of our clients:
Will hiring a social skills coach worth the time, money and efforts that I will spend?
Will it serve my purpose?
Can’t I take the help of my friends?
Can’t I find a solution on my own?
How much will the services of the social skills coach cost me?
Answering all these questions can give your prospects confidence in opting for your coaching services.
The next question arises:
How should you answer the above questions in a way that is compelling enough for your clients?
Let’s have a look.
What can a Social Skills Coach do that friends can not?
So, let’s consider that you want to approach a girl for dating.
Now, the idea of randomly stopping a girl on the street or approaching her amidst her friends may seem a bit unusual and even ridiculous to some of the prospect’s friends.
The reason behind this is that they have a handful amount of experience. This experience either comes from watching TV or Movies. Other than this, they might have themselves experienced certain lessons and their advice and suggestions would be limited to that.
On the contrary, a social skills coach has wider horizons of experience and knowledge. A coach knows what will work and what won’t. Additionally, the coach can help you to realize the WHY part i.e. WHY it worked/didn’t work. Along with that, the coach helps you to follow an action plan for making things work.
Hiring a social skills coach doesn’t mean that a person will get only a bunch of advice. It means much more.
The prospects will get an ideal path to proceed. A support system to offer support throughout the journey. And ultimately a much-needed TRANSFORMATION that none another friend can bring.
Do I really need a social skills coach?
The moment you answer this for your prospect, you break the ice.
Even if your client has taken a step ahead and approached you for your mentorship, it doesn’t mean that he/she is ready to hire you. You have to give him/her solid reasons to accept your coaching services.
And how will you do that?
The client would himself/herself provide you most of the answers. You need to do just two things:
This will allow you to get a hold on the client’s needs and situations. Thereafter you can prepare to answer the different ways in which your coaching sessions can help the client.
For instance, Suppose that you realize that there are enough attempts that your client has given. Still, the goal hasn’t been achieved. A change in the client’s approach or process is required. Thus you can substantiate your answer by describing how will your coaching model/coaching business plan etc. can help the client to fulfill the need and achieve the goals.
Can’t I improve on my own?
Your prospect may think that eventually putting efforts can improve the condition.
How will you answer this?
You cannot simply tell your prospect that he/she is incapable and would need you for sure. That’s a wrong practice.
You must answer this in a way that builds confidence in your client.
Let’s continue with our above example of Dating.
Of course, your client can learn the tricks on his/her own. Maybe by reading books or practicing in clubs and malls. Then where does your need arises?
Hiring a Social Skills Coach is a good time investment!
Learning on own can take months and years, whereas a social skills coach can teach fundamentals and give directions to accelerate the pace of growth. The coach can push a person beyond his/her limit so that learning happens at a faster rate.
Will it be expensive to hire a Social Skills Coach?
Cost is always a point. You need to convince your client why your services are worth paying.
Start by something of this sort:
Any quality thing has a price. We just live once, why to spend money on temporary things? Why not invest the same on yourself.
Recite the advantages of your coaching services.
At the same time, Learn how to price and package your coaching services well. Keep in mind these three things while doing the same:
- Your Target Audience
- Market Rates
- Your client’s affordability range
Prove your client how your coaching services are better than your competitor’s. Emphasizing the positive results that the clients will achieve at the end will make him/her realize that the money is worth spending.
Are you really aware of the Social Skills that your clients need today?
Do you want to augment your list?
Below I have listed some of such skills that a social skills coach must teach the clients.
Patience is the most important Social skill that is needed in the current era. Today most of the people around us play the blame game. This often takes a negative turn and eventually affect us. You cannot always control your environment and the elements in it. What is in your hand is your own self-control. Dealing with patience avoids unnecessary arguments and conflicts.
If your client is a bit short-tempered, it is possible that most of the negative situations around him/her are because of his/her own behavior. In such cases, you need to coach him/her for increasing his/her patience level. This is possible with the help of meditative techniques. Teach your clients with various practices to increase his/her patience level.
Have a look at this Japanese method to relax in 5 minutes.
Cooperation is required to deal both in family matters and workplaces. “All fingers of a hand are not of the same size.” Your client will be surrounded by people of different mindsets, personality types, etc. Things can work smoothly only when your client has a cooperating attitude. This is extremely important in the workplace while working in teams. As a social skills coach, it is your prime responsibility to teach your clients how to cooperate with difficult people at work.
Compassion and Politeness
Most people who lack social skills complain that they are unable to make friends. This results in loneliness. As a social skills coach, you must coach your client towards becoming a compassionate personality. This will eventually attract people to your client. Why? It’s simple- who doesn’t want to be around a person who can feel his/her pain?
Teach your client to be polite and humble at conversation. Explain the importance of words such as “thank you”, “please” and “sorry” to your client. Listening and speaking politely attracts people. It comforts them towards speaking out their personal stuff. This will help your client to build relationships and become more socially involved.
This deals with how to act and react in situations that involve emotions. Emotional Intelligence is often neglected. If your client faces trouble in deciding instant actions while dealing with such situations, coach him/her for incorporating this vital social skill. Asking for Help
Though some people are eager for lending a helping hand they fail to ask for the same for themselves. You may get such a client. This can limit him/her from becoming more socially active. The reason for the same is that people around your client will mostly remain formal if your client doesn’t ask frankly in the hour of need. This may also result in most of the people taking your client for granted. Eventually, your client may be left with just selfish people around. As a social skills coach, you must coach your client to identify the real gems around. As the saying goes- “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
It is very important to coach your clients to articulate their views well. Verbal communication needs to be solid, in a way in which others can understand. As a social skills coach, you must teach your clients effective ways to avoid causes of miscommunication that eventually lead to misunderstandings and conflicts in a social setting.
Along with this Non-verbal communication is also vital. Written communication is a part of it. It is important to use clear language while communicating via Emails, text, Presentations, etc.
Another part of Non-verbal communication is communication which is done through body language, eye contact, and posture.
Teach your Clients the Theory of Mind- TOM
There is one misbelief with many people and that is:
Social skills cannot be mastered.
You will come across many clients who will tell you that people are born with social skills and it is nearly impossible to master them.
Have you ever thought why is this the case?
Simply because of the word “SKILLS” attached to it. This makes most of the people believe that SOCIAL SKILLS are innate qualities which is so not true.
Now your job as a social skills coach is to make your client realize that these skills can be mastered.
A principle in philosophy called “Theory of Mind” OR TOM can come handy here.
This attempts to break down how people think.
Suppose you get up in the morning and see that your wife is shouting at your maid.
Level 1 Thinking:
“I see my wife shouting at my maid for no big reason. I didn’t like that.”
Level 2 Thinking:
I think that there is some other major reason responsible for my wife’s anger. It is probably because I came late the last night.”
Level 3 Thinking:
My wife is looking at me angrily. Probably she wants to indirectly tell me that I am the cause of her anger and the maid is merely a victim.
TOM teaches how we break the thoughts and anticipate their feelings and emotions.
Did we know this since our birth?
Could we understand or even guess what is going on in a person’s mind since our childhood?
This happens only when we give efforts to interact and understand a person better. As a social skills coach, you must convince your clients that they can master social skills if they give efforts in the right direction. And then your duty is to show them that direction.
In the above section, we saw how skills can be mastered if we give some effort to know a person. Now, this will demand time. You cannot completely learn about people till your last breath. What you can do is predict how will individuals react according to whatever knowledge you gather. At the same time, polishing one’s own social skills should also be the part of the process.
If you are a social skills coach then you know that achieving the above in a fixed period of time can be challenging.
Your client may be poor at conversations. His attitude and behavior might be causing trouble for him to mingle well with others. He may find it difficult to imbibe socials skills.
How will you prove that your coaching program is worth enough to bring a transformation?
Below are certain tips that will help you to do the same.
Fix your target audience
Don’t be a small fish in a big pond. Choose a small pond and mark your solid presence in it. This implies that the first step for any social skills coach is to fix his/her target audience.
You can get clients relating to various backgrounds:
- Some may want to master skills for performing well in the workplace
- Some may want to handle family dynamics well
- Some may need social skills to improve their love lives or to make new friends etc.
Choose the section of the audience with whom you are most comfortable. This way you can better build your coaching program as you will have to cater to specific needs and pain points.
What picture your client has of himself/herself by the end of your coaching program?
What changes does your client want to see in himself/herself at a party/ business meeting or any other social event?
Why is your client needing a social skills coach?
All these need to be made clear. After knowing the major needs and wishes of your client, the next step is to build an action plan to bring that transformation under the said period.
Build short-term goals for your clients.
Suppose your coaching program offers 6-month coaching with three 45 mins sessions each week. Decide how do you want your client to behave in a social gathering after the first month. Decide the parameters in which the evaluation will be based on. Keep yourself prepared for the negative risks and alternative plans to handle situations.
Break the process in steps for your client.
Suppose that your client wants to approach a girl for a date but he is too shy to do so.
Probable steps can be:
Day 1: Make eye contact with 5 girls that you don’t know in the street.
Day 2: Make strong eye-contact with a “Hi” with 5 unknown girls
Day 3: Start conversations with 5 girls by asking simple questions like- ‘Excuse me can you tell me of any good restaurants nearby?”
And so on…
Reward your clients
It is possible for your clients to lose hope in between the process. In order to keep your clients committed, it is important to boost their confidence. You can reward them in various ways. Sometimes words of praise and a gentle tap on the back can do wonders. Think of creative ways like a short ice-cream party etc. Let your clients realize that the efforts are indeed bringing fruitful results. Just bear in mind that this should not hurt you financially or in any other way.
Your clients may be unknowingly committing certain mistakes. It is important that as a social skill coach you can figure these out and coach your clients to correct them.
Not being honest
It is important, to be frank, and honest with people around you. Teach your client to let his/her real feelings come out. Many people keep hiding their real feelings. This eventually makes them frustrated and it results in an unexpected blast. This makes things even worse.
Giving too much of your time
We have fixed hours in a day. In these, we have to manage our work-life, relations, etc. If we have a big circle of friends or close ones, it is not possible to give the same level of attention to all.
Your client may be giving his/her valuable attention to some people who might not value the same. They may just take your client for granted without anything in return. It is important that you coach your client to identify people who actually are worth spending time with. Coach your client to collect gems and not stones.
Tolerating Emotional Manipulation
There can be some people around your client you will constantly try to make our client feel guilty. They will throw statements like – “Oh, now you are so busy that you don’t have any time for me.” “I am all alone, nobody cares for me.” etc.
Coach your client ways to not get affected by such remarks. Your client must be able to recognize who is trying to emotionally manipulate him/her and deal accordingly.
Remember that mastering social skills does not only mean becoming more socially active but at the same time knowing where there is a need to cut involvement.
