Why maintain a life coaching blog?

If you look online, there are several reasons why you should start blogging. One such piece is a blog in Huffington Post. It cites 10 reasons why you should start blogging. I have mentioned some below:

  1. Attract an audience: The author talks about how blogging enables you to reach billions of Internet users. This is useful to promote yourself or your life coaching business.
  2. Establish yourself as an expert: Writing on important topics that are relevant to your audience establishes yourself as an authority. A life coaching blog is to coaches in the 2000s what a business card was in the 1990s. Blogs are the new business cards.
  3. Build engagement: Blogging converts traffic into leads and leads into customers. For the reasons mentioned above, audiences are more receptive to subscribing to your coaching services.
  4. Generate passive income: Blogging is just the start. It can lead to other business/traffic generating opportunities such as speaking engagements or writing a column.
  5. Differentiate yourself from the competition: Apparently only 1 percent of Internet users actively create new content. The other 99 percent simply view it. By blogging, you separate yourself from people who do not blog. Standing out is essential in an increasingly competitive economy.

You may read the whole article for more details. The most important factor is blogging enables you to build your brand. People love a good storyteller and a blog is the perfect way to build a bond.

Focus on your ideal client. Imagine that the person is sitting in front of you. Imagine that you have 5 minutes to get the client to sign you up. What would you like to tell him/her?

Once your blog attracts a lot of readers, it can become a separate income generating tool for you. Read this to find out how you can make money from your life coaching blog. You may also want to read this article to maximise your outreach.

How can I earn money from my life coaching blog?

This is one of the most popular questions.

According to this website, the affiliate marketing spend in the US is projected to rise to $6.82 billion by 2020. Affiliate marketing means earning a commission by recommending a product on your blog. It is quite similar to a referral business. You help companies promote their products, and as a reward for your efforts, you get a percentage of the sales. The website also talks about ways to earn money through your life coaching blog. These range from allowing advertisements to writing advertorials or paid-for content for a life coaching blog. Other ideas include selling related e-books and hosting a paid webinar. Do read the article for more ideas.

How much do life coaches earn?

So the second question is about life coaching in general. How much can you earn as a life coach? In a previous blog post here I have written in detail about how much you can expect to earn.

This post claims that the life coaching industry has crossed the $1 billion dollar mark.

  • The International Coach Federation boasts 53,300 members. It has a steady growth trend.
  • Average income for life coaches ranges from $27,100 to $73,100. Specialty coaches can charge more than $100,000 annually.
  • Growth projections for the life coaching industry are an estimated 6.7%. This would take revenues to $1.34 billion by 2022.
  • 92% of life coaches remain active in the field.
  • In Asia, there were around 3,700 coaches. They contributed $113 million in total annual revenue.
  • More and more corporations are hiring life coaches instead of mental health counsellors to work in-house with employees (no stigma).
  • Life coaches remain unregulated. There are no state licensing requirements. This suggests freedom of practice, but also raises concerns about quality.

This news report reported from the 2017 ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study. The research was also conducted by PwC Research. It stated:

  • 89% people in India are aware of life coaching
  • 59% have partnered with a life coach at some time
  • 97% were satisfied with the experience

In short, the life coaching market is constantly growing. The need of the hour is differentiated offering. And this is where blogging can help your life coaching business.

Will a life coaching blog generate revenue?

What revenues can you expect from blogging?

According to this article, salaries for bloggers vary. A Glassdoor search for “blogger” shows salaries ranging from $19K to $79K a year. Other sources say the 14% of bloggers who earn a salary get $24K a year (or $33K for corporate bloggers). Freelance bloggers can earn from $10 to $100 or more for a relatively short post.

How can I start my own life coaching blog?

Firstly, can you write and run your own life coaching blog? Yes you can! The best part about blogging is that anyone with any skill level can create a blog. Gone are the days when you had to design your own webpage and look after the design and content part for blogging.

With plenty of online resources available now, this is no longer a difficult task. Writing a blog and keeping it updated with fresh content is the most important part. However, with plenty of online websites available, paying for a writer is not difficult. You can write your blogs and check the grammar and spelling through Grammarly.com. Another helpful thing to research is ways to improve your writing. Some tips are provided in this article.

Instead of in-depth pieces, focus on writing short blogs and include lots of images.

Promoting a blog is easy too. After you write the content, SEO tools and a solid marketing plan will help to bring in the readers.

Step 1: Create a plan for your life coaching blog

Are you ready to start blogging?

That does not, however, mean that you begin without preparation. Let us start with the basics about how to do this.

First, draw up a plan. What is the objective behind your blog? Are you looking to maintain an online journal? Do you want to record your learning and chart your own growth and development through your life coaching blog?

Or, do you want to reach out to your ideal client? If this is your intention, then read on.

Step 2: Differentiate yourself through your life coaching blog

First, what does a life coach do?

According to Oprahmag.com, a life coach does three things:

  1. Coaching is about helping people to identify the obstacles that keep getting in their way
  2. It involves assisting them with finding motivation
  3. And it means pinpointing any resistance to change

I have written a previous blog post on what are the top traits that make for a successful life coach. Some of the qualities that people look for in a successful life coach are integrity, experience, the ability to invite trust and retain it and a non-judgemental attitude. You can read the whole post here.

Step 3: Establish the pillars for your life coaching blog

There are two essential pillars to your life coaching blog. These are intent and content.

The question is how will a life coaching blog help you to do your job better? This is what I call Intent. What do you hope to achieve through your blog? Is it more customers? Do you hope to establish yourself as an expert in a niche? This alone will drive the content you put out.

Say your primary motive is to get more new customers through your life coaching blog. Your content should then be a teaser to draw people. Amplify your outreach through social media.

On the other hand if you are seeking to establish yourself as an expert in the business, you will want to write in-depth articles that are well researched.

As a next step for creating the blog, research your market. Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What does the target reader profile look like for your life coaching blog? What does the target demographic tell you about your reader: age, gender, location, technical expertise, occupation?
  • What is your target reader mostly looking for: self help or opinion? Which sites are most popular?
  • What is the competitor writing about?
  • Is there a need that the target audience has expressed? Is that need being met?
  • How often do you want to update content?
  • What will be your unique selling point (USP) in terms of content?
  • Do you have the money to invest in a writer and web designer?

The last question will determine how frequently you want to update your content and how much money will go into building a blog for you. An online website quoted a study that says 80% people are writing their own blog. You may choose to amplify your messages through your social media platforms too.

Life coaching blog template

There are several life coaching blog templates online based on different themes. You may want to look at some options here and here. Depending on your intent and content, you can plan the look of your blog.

The next part of creating a life coaching blog is to decide where you will host it. Some of the popular platforms are WordPress.org, Blogger and Tumblr. This is a particularly popular question on Quora and several people have expressed their preference and reasons. You may want to check out some of the threads here and here. Meanwhile you may also want to check this article for a comparison between various blog hosting options. The author also provides a list of pros and cons while comparing. Choose an option that works for you in the long run.

The next part is to write content. As I have said earlier, much of the content will depend on the intention behind blogging. You will also need to choose a name for your blog. As a rule of thumb, I advise coaches not to worry about the name and design for the blog. Changing these is not difficult or expensive. As you evolve, the content for your blog will change. Hence, choose a name that you think will stand as a test of time.

The next step involves promoting your blog. This is a marketing process and will ensure your content reaches the target reader you are writing for. I have written an earlier blog piece on creating a life coaching website. You may want to look it up.

This brings us to the latest trend in blogging: video blogging or vlogging. There are several videos on YouTube on how to start vlogging. You may check out one such vlog here that talks about the production and editing a video. Here is a list of some popular vloggers. If you are wondering why YouTube stars make so much money, you are not alone. The Guardian has tried to explain this in their article on Why are YouTube stars so popular?

You will find more details and statistics about vlogging on the YouGov website here.

Amplify outreach of your life coaching blog

Say you have done all of the above, but something is still not working. Take a look at your social media strategy.

Most people look at social media as an afterthought. They merely take a few lines from their blog and post it on their personal social media platforms: Facebook or Instagram. The reality is that social media is a very powerful medium of communication. It should be used to draw traffic to your blog or website. And for this very reason it deserves a separate social media strategy.

Why is social media so powerful? These are the 3 primary reasons.

  • It has the power to reach a wide audience and expand the number immensely
  • It helps to establish your life coaching business firmly with top-of-the-mind recall among your audience
  • It creates opportunities to drive leads and convert them into sales

I have previously written a blog post on social media marketing where I have mentioned three simple tactics to follow. You will be able to read the full post here. You may also want to check out a few blogs on how to capitalise on Facebook to win fans. Some posts are linked here and Becoming A Facebook Yoda.

Lastly, I recommend this article for everyone looking to create content. It has a compilation of popular websites you will need at every stage of the process.

You may also want to look up some life coaching blogs and learn from them. A simple search on Google will throw up several life coaching blogs to look at. For example, there are 100 life coaching blogs and websites listed here.

I would recommend that you choose the life coach who inspires you the most and then try to see if he has a blog or vlog or podcast.
