I come from a family of coaches, and growing up, one thing used to always bother me.
Why would anyone dedicate their whole lives to complete and almost devotional service? What does it take for one truly and completely immerse oneself in the service of others?
I used to see my mum working with clients day in and day out, and I used to ask myself…”what drives her?”
Eventually, I found the answer to that question, and long before I knew it, I became a coach as well.
I started out as a dating coach and went on to become a “coach’s coach”i.e. I help coaches from around the world build their business online.
Over the years I have had the good fortune of working with some world famous coaches like Christopher Howard, the founder of Rock House Global and one of the biggest NLP coaches in the world.
Hear what he has to say after he worked with me and my team:
So, what is this funnel he is talking about?
I will tell you all about it later in my free webinar.
For now, let’s see what being a “life coach” is all about. If you want to know what drives a life coach and what keeps them going, it is important to know what they are and what it takes to become one.
What is a life coach?
So before we talk about anything else, it is important to properly define what a life coach is and what they do.
The way I describe life coaches is by thinking of them as catalysts. Are you stuck somewhere in your life? Do you want to improve a particular area of your life? Do you want someone who can take you from point A to point B efficiently? That is exactly what a life coach can do for you.
In fact, let’s explore it in some more detail.
What does a life coach do (and what do they don’t do)?
“Life coach” is a very vague term. A life coach can do a lot of things for their clients but they mostly revolve around making them “unstuck”.
We tend to go through life on auto-pilot. Most of us don’t have a clue as to what they are capable of. This is where you can really help people as life coaches:
- Helping them discover their life’s purpose.
- A Motivator.
- A Strategist.
- Keeping them Accountable.
- Helping Them Make More Meaningful Relationships
Helping Them Discover Their Life’s Purpose
Most people live a very subdued life. They have all dreamt of grandiose things when they were a little kid but as they kept getting older the dream got subdued even more and more.
As a life coach, you can help them discover that passion and fire again. You can help them get out of the monotony of their everyday life and usher them along the path to their greatness again.
Maybe you can even help them discover their inner child. The part of their psyche that never moved on, the one that always wanted to accomplish the dream they had originally set out to do.
Most people are scared of change and as a result, rarely take any actions. They live their whole lives secretly wishing they were doing something else while living their mundane lives and going to their boring jobs.
They realise where their comfort zone lies and rarely do they step out of it. You, as their life coach, can motivate them and push them into stepping out and expressing themselves. You can be their guide and motivator.
I have seen this happen so many times!
So many times I have seen people who are all pumped and ready to bring change into their lives but they have no strategy or plan whatsoever.
As their life coach, you can help them gain clarity by strategizing their action plans for them. The mere thought of someone giving them a strategy and a plan of action will greatly empower your clients.
Keeping Them Accountable
Many people stray from their paths simply because they don’t have anyone calling on their BS. How many times have you seen people who enthusiastically start a diet and then fall off a month later? Chances are that you have done the same as well.
This is where a life coach comes really handy. You can constantly hold them accountable every time they fall short of expectations.
Helping Them Make More Meaningful Relationships
As a life coach, you can bring a lot of happiness into your client’s life by helping them turn over a new page. Usually turning over a new page also means building and sustaining new and more meaningful relationships.
So these are all the things that a life coach can do for their clients, but there is one thing that life coaches DON’T do.
Life coaches are not therapists. In fact, let’s explore this topic in more detail.
What is the difference between a Therapist and a Life Coach?
There is a very basic difference between a therapist and a life coach. When you think about it, it is actually very apparent.
A therapist helps you rebuild your life by going through your past. They aim to work through all your past issues. They could be fractured relationships or trauma and help you rebuild them or accept them for what they are.
Life coaching is taking who you are and putting you in a position where you can achieve your goals in the future. The main focus of coaching is in your future and fulfilling the potential inside you.
It is very important that you don’t mix up the two. If you think that your clients are really looking for therapy rather than coaching, then you must tell them to get help from a certified therapist.
Should you become a life coach?
Ah not this is more of a self-introspection question now, isn’t it?
Think about it. Take a look back at your life and recall certain moments.
Are you the goto person every one of your friend calls whenever they are in trouble? Do you love listening to other people’s problems and tell them what they can do when they are done venting?
Do you love it when people use your strategies and make proper changes in their lives? If you do, then you might have what it takes to become a life coach.
What are the requirements of being a life coach?
Here are the skills that you will require as a life coach:
As a coach your communication skills are absolutely paramount. You must build rapport and a connection with your clients. When you build this connection and nurture it over time, you will endear yourself to them.
Plus, you will also build a kind of irreplaceable trust which will become extremely valuable over time.
Calling A Spade A Spade
As a coach, it is your duty to not spare the rod when it comes to your clients. If your clients aren’t following your instructions, then you will need to hold them accountable to it.
They are not hiring you so that you can mollycoddle them. The very fact that they have hired you in the first place shows that they are serious about their transformation. The least you can do to show that you respect their commitment is by calling a spade a spade.
When your clients stray from their path, it is your duty to get them back on track.
The University of Missouri did an interesting study where they found that 45% of communication is “listening”.
Here is a direct quote from the report: “Numerous tests confirm that we are inefficient listeners. Studies have shown that immediately after listening to a 10-minute oral presentation, the average listener has heard, understood and retained 50 percent of what was said.”
Listening is such an underrated art. As a coach, it is absolutely critical that you master it. When you listen to your clients, they will see that you truly care about them and their dreams.
Your clients are there with you so that you can give them some clarity in their life. Whether it is by keeping them accountable or giving them certain steps to follow, that depends on you and your coaching.
If you can’t give your clients the clarity that they are looking for then they simply won’t invest in your coaching.
Do you need online life coach certification?
If you are sure that you want to be a life coach, then you don’t really need any certification whatsoever. You can get started right away if you want to.
Having said that though, getting a life coach certification can help you gain credibility with clients and help you understand how the business works.
But, understanding the business isn’t enough. When it comes to business building what matters is execution.
What are the best life coach training programs?
Like I said above, you don’t need certification programs to get started. What really matters is getting out there and actually helping people.
If however, you want to become a certified life coach anyway then I suggest that you get certification from courses approved by the ICF (International Coaches Foundation).
Symbiosis Coaching, Life Coach Training are great places to get started. You can find the links to these places at the end of the article.
How much is a life coach salary?
Payscale did an interesting research on life coach salaries over the years and this is what they arrived at:
In the first 5 years, a life coach earns up to $47,000 per month and that eventually grows over the years.
That’s not really a surprise, as you gain more experience you are expected to earn more and that holds true for any profession.
But for me, I feel that a $47,000 annual salary is not enough for someone who is making such a profound impact on the lives of others.
So, how can you get a salary that is more in tune with the impact that you are having? Well, you can scroll down and check out my free webinar to know more about that.
